On Friday 4 April, Volunteers Malta (the team of Projekta Malta) brought three very different worlds together: the Entain/Bwin Group, Dar il Kaptan, and our own team. A private company, a voluntary organisation, and us in the middle, making sure the effort actually delivers value.

Entain/Bwin had reached out through Volunteers Malta CSR platform. They weren’t interested in a generic team-building session. They wanted something real, practical, and useful.
So instead of offering a ready-made plan, we asked the right questions.
What sort of experience do you want your team to walk away with? And what sort of contribution do you want to leave behind?

Those answers pointed us straight to Dar il Kaptan, a residential home providing respite care to people with disabilities. After a proper conversation with their team and a rundown of what they were short on, Entain said yes to spending a full day volunteering on site.

And because not everyone can give time, we added a contribution of our own: 50 kg of oranges and lemons plus peelers, juicers, and tools to support Dar il Kaptan’s figolli baking initiative. A small but useful boost to a labour-heavy project.

Plans Changed. And That’s Exactly Why CSR Should Be Flexible

When the Entain team arrived, the original plan was to support the figolli prep. But real workplaces shift, and homes like Dar il Kaptan shift even faster. They had more urgent tasks that day, but the team didn’t blink.
They stepped into the kitchen, helped housekeeping, and reorganised supplies. No fuss. No drama.

Volunteering isn’t about sticking to your own agenda. It’s about showing up and doing what’s genuinely needed. Too many CSR activities forget that. This one didn’t.

The message was clear: places like Dar il Kaptan need consistent, everyday support, not only holiday-season attention or once-a-year visits.

The Conversations That Matter

What stayed with us were the honest chats. Larissa from Dar il Kaptan’s HR team walked us through their reality, their challenges, and their plans. One request felt surprisingly simple:
They need older laptops or computers for residents to use during the day.
Not new tech. Just working devices sitting unused in homes or offices.

If you’ve got one lying around, this is a straightforward way to help. No fanfare. Just practical impact.

And this is why Volunteers Malta and Connect4Impact exist. To make these specific needs visible so people and organisations can respond.

What People Had to Say

The day left a genuine mark on everyone involved, and the feedback speaks for itself. Here’s a glimpse of how volunteers felt after spending time with the team at Dar il Kaptan.

“I was impressed by the amount of work Dar il-Kaptan staff do and how important it is that they are supported.”

“A worthy utilisation of our time. Good hosts, clear objectives and I believe we had a positive impact on the support team at Dar il-Kaptan.”

“Such a great experience, working with our colleagues to make an impact for our community”

“Very pleasant and heart warming experience”

And from Dar il Kaptan’s side, their team shared how much the volunteers’ presence meant to them.

“It was a pleasure working with your team. They brought a cheerful energy. They were really hard working and helped out a lot in what we needed.”

Not Just a Day. A Starting Point.

This CSR activity did more than tick a corporate box. It sparked the sort of connections Malta needs more of:
• A business and an NGO working side by side
• Volunteers seeing what solidarity looks like in practice
• A real discussion about ongoing support, not one-offs

“We’d definitely do this again. It was well organised, impactful, and aligned with our company values.”
— Entain Volunteer

And if I’m honest, this is where many companies fall short. CSR should be a long-term mindset, not a single photo opportunity. Entain’s team understood that and delivered.

Want to Create Something Meaningful Too?

If your business wants a CSR activity that actually benefits the community, ask for one with purpose. Don’t settle for the default options.

If you’re an NGO seeking new partnerships, let us help you get visible.

This initiative is supported by the Erasmus+ programme, enabling us to connect people and organisations for meaningful social impact here in Malta and beyond.

Because volunteering should never be a one-day exercise.
It should build long-term connections, spark community spirit, and push all of us to do a little better every time.
